TEACHING ADULT LEARNERS ENGLISH (DANIELA CASTILLO)
I
decided select this article about adult learners because it has some important
information according with it the adult learners have needs, experiences and
expectations when will learn a foreign language in this case is English
language, this is a study of (University) Lithuanian
University of Educational Sciences also this article is about the trials` teachers
with the adult learners but it depends according with the teacher`s methodology
and the different skills that they follow during their learning.
One
of the most important difference between young learners and adult learners is
that the adult learners have very clear goals in their learning in a new
language because the majority of adult learners work and they have limited time
so they try to prioritize their time while they are learning.
As
teachers of adult learners we need to use a good methodology for them and good
techniques to have clear comprehension in each class because we know that these
learners have different problems in some cases are personal and Knowledge.
As we
teachers we know the importance of the four basic communications skills in the
learning process so we need to have an effective communication in any
environment of adult learners specially in the workplace and in the classroom
in this article the reading skill is about the receptive skill in a written manner
for example we can use some articles according with the level of the learners
to follow this skill.
The
writing skill is a productive skill and also it is related with the grammar
structure this skill helps to the learner gain independence, comprehensibility,
fluency and creativity in writing this skill also help to the learners write
their thoughts into words using meaningful form though a written message.
The
speaking skill is very important to improve English language according with
this article the learners want to follow this skill to have a conversation in
their trips or for their business as you know reading and listening are
receptive skills.
The
listening is the receptive skill according with this article listening is the
ability to hear attentively and to understand what others are saying. As
conclusion about the four skills reading and writing are use to have a written
communication and listening and speaking to oral communication.
When
we teach any kind of learners in this case adult learners we need to be very
creative in our classes for example is important encourage them to ask
questions related to the topic or any doubt, keep them engaged during each
class using different materials or techniques know how we can recognize the different learning
styles of our students, also we need to teach in some cases some topics about
their interests.
In
conclusion the adult learners always are immense, it has a range of different challenges
that adult learners may face, so it includes the difficulty of balancing
education and a full-time study, which is difficult for people in full-time employ.

Definitely Adults have clear goals and expectations about what they want, and what they need to learn. I consider that teachers should practice in class integrated skills. For example, read an interesting text, underlined the new words, so they can learn new vocabulary, and develop the reading skill. Then they can give a summary of the text. I want to recommend a good web site where our students can practice integrated skills, this site is News in Levels.com, This site has a variety of news around the world. where learners can read and listening at the same time.
ReplyDeleteI agree that adults need to be thought with a good methodology. Also want to say that adults do not like to work in complex task.Adults need concisely activities useful. They like vocabulary in where they can to apply in the real life .So,We as teachers we have to choose relevant topics for adults.
ReplyDeleteHello Daniella
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your article where you spoke about the differences between young and adult learners. It means that we as a teacher must know about how to use a good methodology for teaching them. Besides, you write about the importance of having an effective learning process for each population learners.
I realized about the challenges that teachers have when they have to teach these different kinds of learners.
As conclusion, we can notice that adults don’t need to go around in the process of teaching and learning, they need to go to the point in order to get their objectives.
There are a marked trend in the learning both adults and youth clearly in the youngest have others kinds of interests because follow a regular course and are not worried time neither of the goals, the elder deal to gain the time resource and defined goals because need to travel, do trades and this become a necessity, As teachers the teaching learning in adults should be focused in themes really useful and interesting and addressed to the job area, obviously is better if use the technology.
ReplyDeleteHi Daniela,
ReplyDeleteI like how you broke down the four different skills. That is not really something we talked about, but it is good to remember. Also, the idea that adults often come to our class with preconceived ideas about what teaching and learning look like, and that we should always try to fulfill their needs and these preconceptions, while still using sound methodology. You reminded me of this when you mentioned the writing skill, and how it can give adult learners confidence in the language, which is really important for this group of learners.
