Teaching Adult Learners (Byron)
Teaching Adult Learners ( Byron Soria)
Well, I chose this topic, because, actually I am working at the University as an English teacher, and obviously I am interested to learn new things, and share some ideas. I consider this article is good in the teaching-learning process especially with adults. I would like to share really good aspects that this paper mentions and add others things base on my own experience. For example, this article says Adults have a lot of experience that can contribute to the class.
I completely agree with this. I had the opportunity to work with some
teachers that were studying in the university. They have
been educators in different schools for some years, but they do not have a
bachelor’s degree, they were in the collage to get the degree. Obviously, they
have experience in the teaching field. One day one of them told me. “Teacher, I know a game
in Spanish can we adapt it to English and practice the target language.” Of
course, I accepted. I could notice that was a good game. I took advantage of
that game and practiced listening and speaking skills. Besides, I learned from
them. In fact,
I use
that game with my other students.
Other aspect that I would like to
remark is: Are Adults more motivated that teens? Definitely, it is truth. They
have an extra motivation to learn. Let me show one of my experiences. I am
going to refer to the group of Adult learners that I mentioned above. They were educators,
they had experience, but unfortunately, they did not have the degree. They have
an external motivation, because, if they get the degree, they could obtain a
better salary, or even participate for tenure. They were really motivated, they
wanted to learn. I could do a lot of activities in class with this group.
Besides, unlike teens, adults rarely miss a class. My students always were in
class.
Teachers can take advantage of Students’ motivation and use new
strategies to help students to improve their English. For example, I discovered on the internet a good website name “News in
Levels” where students can read a variety of articles of news around the world, where students can read and
listening, and increase their vocabulary at the same time.
The last aspect that article points to is that adults have a good
attitude in teaching-learning process. I totally agree, if we compare
teens to adults. Teacher almost never is
going to have problems of behavior in class. Teens are anxious, absent-minded,
make a lot of noise, they do not like to collaborate, while adults are quiet,
calm. They have the necessity of learning. Adults are always willing to
collaborate and participate in class. In other words, they have a positive attitude, they can
acquire the target language better that others learners.
Finally, it is important to mention that
some aspects such as: experiences, motivation, attitude can help maximize the
language learning of adults.
Hello Byrito I think the same that work with adult learnes as teachers is a challange because in some cases they have some barriers to acquire a new language but at the same time they have clear goals, expectatives what they can learn I am agree byrito because some adult learners have the knowledge but in some cas3es they dot`t have a career because some years ago they can enter to worl without a degree.
ReplyDeleteThey like to learn with technology they have more motivetion to learn through it and the most important they can pay atention in the class.
Hello Byron
ReplyDeleteI agree with you based on your article when you said that teacher can take advantage from adults’ motivation in order to improve their English because adults have a good attitude in teaching-learning process.
Byron, I agree with you about that adults are more motivated than teenagers because they know what they want to get in their lives and they don’t hesitate taking advantages about the first opportunity for learning.
Hi Byron,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your analysis of the article - you did great, connecting ideas from the articles to real-life experiences in your own teaching. I, too, have noticed that when I teach adults, I usually come away learning something as well, and that is something I LOVE as a teacher: learning from my students. It is really a very enriching experience for both students and teachers.
